The Compare Jobs feature lets you view the matching cost items of two or more jobs side by side in a single screen. The ability to compare jobs helps you evaluate whether current costs and hours of your cost items are above or below past benchmarks, making it easier to see differences and highlight areas that might require further review.
To compare jobs, select Jobs > Compare Jobs from the Backstage View. The Estimate Job Explorer page opens for job comparison.
The Estimate Job Explorer page consists of a left panel with expandable nodes for selecting the jobs to include in the comparison view. The remainder of the page is for the comparison view, consisting of a CBS Register containing columns for comparing quantities, costs, and hours between jobs. You can select between two comparison views. Both views include the same columns, but they are arranged differently to support distinct areas of focus.
This view focuses on columns that show the average, low, and high costs and hours across all the selected jobs, with columns for viewing individual values for each job shown after those columns farther to the right.
This view focuses on comparing the quantities, costs, and hours for each job side by side, followed by the columns showing average, lows, and high values across jobs shown farther to the right.
For successful comparison of cost items across jobs, the jobs must match on determined criteria. To set the criteria for matching, select the Set Item Matching Criteria button.
On the Item Matching Criteria dialog box, choose how to match cost items.
The first option is only used if the Maintain CBS Structure at Level setting is enabled on the Job Properties > Cost Basis tab. Otherwise, select the Match cost items using any combination of the following fields option. This enables the options to choose the criteria to include for matching.
Note that the cost items must be an exact match for all criteria selected, otherwise they are not considered a match.
In the Display section, you can choose which cost items to show in the comparison view. The image and table below provide more information about the available Display options.
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Show all items |
Shows all cost items, including items that are not a match. Non-matching items will show on their own distinct rows. |
| Only show items that match at least 1 other job | Will not show cost items that aren’t a match with at least one other job. |
| Only show items that match across all jobs | Will not show cost items unless they match for all selected jobs. |
After the matching criteria is selected, click OK.
With the matching criteria selected, choose either the Show Job Comparison View or the Show Column Comparison View to see the results of your comparison.
When comparing jobs, if a job contains more than one match to another job based on the selected search criteria, the Resolve Duplicate Matches button becomes active and the Resolve Duplicate Matches dialog box automatically opens to help you resolve the duplicate matches.
As indicated in the help prompt that shows on the Resolve Duplicate Matches dialog box, you can resolve the matching issue using the following steps.
From the drop-down list located at the top left, select a job to be the master job from the list of jobs being compared.
The view then shows the master job columns for CBS Position Code, Description, Unit of Measure, and Currency, followed by a column for each job being compared to the master job.
Under the column for each compared job, look for editable fields. These indicate there is a duplicate match that needs to be resolved.
Click in the editable field to view the duplicate matches found in the job.
In this example, the matching criteria is based on description and in the job being compared (1002GC) there are two cost items with the same description (Excavation), creating a duplicate match to the Excavation item in the master job (1001GF).
From the drop-down list, select the item to match the master job’s item.
When selected, the match is resolved.
After you have finished resolving duplicate matches, click OK to close the window.
